CNN —German soccer authorities will redesign the number “4” on the country’s national jerseys amid claims it resembles a logo used by Nazi paramilitary units. The DFB unveiled Germany’s new uniforms, which will be worn by both men’s and women’s teams, in late March. Less than two weeks ago, the DFB announced that Nike will take over from Adidas as the German soccer team’s official shirt supplier from 2027. Adidas has produced the country’s jerseys since the 1950s, during which time the men’s team (either as Germany or West Germany) has claimed four World Cups. The logo was so widely used at the time that some German typewriters were produced with a stylized “SS” key.

Joining the Haganah, Schwimmer discovered, wasn't as easy as just strolling through the door. "He felt he had to do his part in creating a Jewish state, so this could never happen again," Schwimmer recalled. Rather than melt down the surplus weapons for scrap, Liff told Greenspun to take as much as he wanted — free of charge. "It went against the grain to buck the same government we had fought to preserve only a few years before," Hank Greenspun recalled. In 2001, at the urging of Brian Greenspun, Schwimmer received a presidential pardon from Bill Clinton.

(AP) — Lefty Driesell, the Hall of Fame coach whose folksy drawl belied a fiery on-court demeanor that put Maryland on the college basketball map and enabled him to rebuild several struggling programs, died Saturday. Driesell was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, but his entry into the Naismith shrine proved more elusive. He went 9-14 in his debut, one of only two times over an entire season in which he would finish with a losing record as a college coach. Congratulations.”After leaving Maryland, Driesell was hired in 1988 by James Madison, a small Virginia school that finished 10-18 in 1987. A jury will be be brought to Memphis from outside of Shelby County for the June 3 trial of Johnson and Cornelius Smith Jr. Both men have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the daytime ambush of Young Dolph, who was buying cookies at a Memphis bakery when he was gunned down in November 2021. CNN —Black History Month, which gets underway this week, is a chance to give Americans the timely reminder that you can’t teach our history honestly without understanding Black struggle and triumph. There are few aspects of America’s past that haven’t been impacted by conscientious Black people and their resistance to systemic racism and illiberal democracy. The situation at Harvard has been made more dire by the university’s failure to push back sufficiently against broader political attacks. IN 1942, Claire McCardell, America’s most American designer, created her best-known dress, the denim Pop-over, so named because you could pop it on over other clothes to protect them during housework. Department-store buyers were so enamored of the Pop-over that they persuaded McCardell’s employer, Adolph Klein, to commit to a huge 75,000-yard denim order, assuring him the garment would be a sell-out hit. At the time, denim was a workingman’s textile that women rarely wore. He implored McCardell to come up with some other denim designs—just in case the order was overkill. (Klein needn’t have worried about the Pop-over: Priced at $6.95, it shattered sales expectations.)

THE MONEY KINGS: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America, by Daniel SchulmanOn Feb. 6, 1904, a group of powerful Jewish men met at the Fifth Avenue mansion of Jacob Schiff. Then he asked the same question my grandfather used to ask: What does it mean for the Jews? Schiff is the book’s central figure, and by the early 20th century, on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, his influence had spread beyond Wall Street. At the time, Jews were being raped and murdered in yet another series of pogroms in imperial Russia. These attacks burned such a lasting scar on the Jewish psyche that, earlier this year, an Israeli major general was moved to compare the slaughter of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7 to “a pogrom from our grandparents’ time.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A judge removed himself from the Young Dolph murder case Friday after he was ordered to do so by a Tennessee appeals court, which questioned whether he could be impartial to a man charged with killing the rapper two years ago. Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee asked the court clerk to assign a new judge in the high-profile case. Johnson and Cornelius Smith have pleaded not guilty in the killing of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr. Coffee said he made the call “in court, on the bench, with another case before the Court,” according to the appeal ruling. The appeals court reversed Coffee's denial of the recusal motion and said that a new judge should be reassigned.

Adolph sued Uber in 2019, claiming the company misclassified UberEats drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, who must be reimbursed for work expenses under California law. A unique California law called the Private Attorney General Act, or PAGA, allows workers to sue for employment law violations on behalf of the state and keep one-quarter of any money they win. The California Supreme Court said nothing in that law bars workers from pursuing claims on their own behalf in arbitration while separately litigating large-scale claims in court. Michael Rubin, who represents Adolph, said the ruling could spur companies to reconsider forcing workers' claims into arbitration if large-scale PAGA lawsuits can still proceed in court. Business groups maintain that arbitration is quicker and more efficient than court, allowing workers to recoup more money.

A video clip showing North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s address at a 2023 Moms for Liberty summit has been cropped to appear as though he endorsed multiple 20th century dictators in his remarks. Mark Robinson (R) says dictators like Hitler, Stalin and Mao are being taken out of context and promotes reading their writings. Hitler followed that by ordering leftist leaders sent to concentration camps or assassinated, as explained in the Britannica article. Currently serving as Lieutenant Governor for North Carolina (here), Robinson joined the state’s gubernatorial race in April 2023 (here). The video clip shared with a claim that it shows Mark Robinson endorsing dictators omits context.

Last month, Huggins was disciplined after he used a homophobic slur twice and mocked Catholics on a local Cincinnati radio program. Huggins, who coached at the University of Cincinnati from 1989 to 2005, was charged with drunken driving in Ohio in 2004 and pleaded no contest. In 38 seasons as the head coach at Akron, Cincinnati, Kansas State and West Virginia, he led his teams to 26 N.C.A.A. But a national title has eluded Huggins, who has the most wins of any coach to never cut down the championship nets. “Coach Huggins devoted himself to his players, to our student body, to our fans and alumni and to all West Virginians,” the statement read.

Rep. Eric Swalwell tore into the House GOP for removing Rep. Ilhan Omar from a powerful committee. Swalwell pointed out that an official GOP Twitter account praised Kanye West and took months to delete the message. House Republicans later voted to remove Omar from the panel. In October, the Twitter account for Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee expressed solidarity with Kanye West. House Republicans cited that report in a separate effort to remove Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee.
The Campaign Legal Center fights against lawlessness and unethical behavior in politics. Brendan Quinn, a spokesperson for the Campaign Legal Center, says the nonprofit organization cannot return or give away Bankman-Fried's money because the money is already spent. Asked whether the Campaign Legal Center would consider disgorging an amount of money equivalent to what Bankman-Fried contributed, Quinn noted that the Campaign Legal Center is not a political candidate or committee. The Campaign Legal Center has not yet provided Insider a copy, first requested December 2, of the most recent IRS 990 tax document filed by Campaign Legal Center Action, its advocacy arm. Former President Donald Trump has been a frequent target of the Campaign Legal Center's legal and ethics efforts.
A man suspected in connection with the killing of hip-hop artist Young Dolph a year ago turned himself in to law enforcement Friday, police said. Memphis police earlier Friday had said Johnson was a suspect and was wanted for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and asked for the public's help locating him. Three other people have previously been arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Cornelius Smith, 32; Justin Johnson, 24; and Hernandez Govan, 43, have been charged with first-degree murder and other charges. He was in Memphis for his annual Thanksgiving giveaway and stopped by the bakery when he was shot, his lawyer said at the time of the killing.
Ivana's children — Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump — spent their teenage years there. The property is located between Fifth and Madison avenues and is listed for sale for $26.5 million. All proceeds from the estate sale are slated to go to Ivana's three children: Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and, Ivanka Trump. "My mom absolutely loved that house," son Eric told The Journal, adding that the property "embodied Ivana Trump." In her 2017 book "Raising Trump," Trump noted that the property needed "significant work" after it had sat empty for nearly 12 years.

A Nazi sympathizer who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Timothy Hale-Cusanelli in May was found guilty of five charges related to the siege. At least 919 people have been arrested in connection to the siege and nearly 400 people have pleaded guilty. McFadden also castigated Hale-Cusanelli, saying he believed that the defendant's antisemitic, racist, and sexist beliefs, in part, led Hale-Cusanelli to the Capitol on January 6. Following the siege, Hale-Cusanelli described the experience as "exhilarating" and said he was "hoping for a civil war," according to prosecutors.
